September 30, 2021 – Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The CJR acknowledges and honours the First National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We have a responsibility to improve relationships between nations and to improve our own understanding of local indigenous people and their cultures.

We take this time to remind ourselves that we at UBC and in Vancouver are on the traditional, and unceded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples who have called this area home for many thousands of years and continue to do so today.

At this time of learning about the deadly legacy of residential schools, we acknowledge the harms and mistakes of the past. And it is crucial that we work to move forward in partnership with indigenous communities in a spirit of reconciliation and collaboration.

For more background, please see UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan: https://isp.ubc.ca/.
