The Visualization of The Tale of Genji in Manga

Abstract
In this lecture, Dr. Niimi will talk about the visualization of The Tale of Genji in manga. The readers of Japanese manga are divided into different categories by gender. Generally speaking, we could divide Japanese manga into four categories: Shōjo manga (a manga type aimed at female adolescents), Shōnen manga (a mange type aimed at male adolescents), Lady’s Comic (a mange type aimed at female adults), and Seinen manga (a mange type aimed at male adults). Although most manga versions of The Tale of Genji are targeting female readers, there are various types being produced in the visualization of The Tale of Genji in manga. Dr. Niimi will talk about how the visualization of The Tale of Genji in manga change from the 1970s to the present.
