Asian Library Japanese-Language Book Club – ねむり NEMURI BY HARUKI MURAKAMI

Abstract:

This book club will be of special interest to Alumni who have studied Japanese at an advanced level (including reading literature in Japanese), we also welcome current students and community members with Japanese fluency to form ties with UBC alumni in this casual setting.

The idea is for each book club member to read popular works by Japanese authors in Japanese, and come together to discuss them in Japanese. In this inaugural session, we will be reading a selection of Murakami Haruki’s short stories.

Cost: $10 per person

Light refreshments will be available at both sessions.

Copies of the book will be distributed at Session 1.

About the Facilitator:

KAZUHIKO IMAI – MA STUDENT IN THE DEPARTMENT OF ASIAN STUDIES

Kazuhiko Imai is a MA student in the Department of Asian Studies. He was born and raised in Japan until he entered a liberal arts college in Southern California, where his love for Murakami’s works was bloomed. Before beginning his MA program at UBC, he taught high school English at a Montessori school in Houston, Texas.
