ASTU201 Canada, Japan and the Pacific: Cultural Studies Sections

An interdisciplinary introduction to the cultures of Canada and Japan, and the interrelations between them. Specific topics vary from year to year but will include themes such as constructing the past; nationalism; self-perceptions; cross-cultural perceptions; multiculturalism in Canada and Japan; images in architecture, film and literature; mythologies.

ASTU202 Canada, Japan and the Pacific: Political, Economic and Geographical Perspectives Sections

An interdisciplinary introduction to political, economic and geographical interactions between Japan and Canada, the links between these countries and other Pacific Rim nations, and the historical origins of these connections. Specific topics will vary from year to year, but will include themes such as economic integration in the Pacific region; the role of resource economies such as Canada's; security relations in the Pacific; the role of Japanese investment in the Asia-Pacific region.

Popular culture's role in the production of Asian Canadian and diasporic communities, with emphasis on race, gender, sexuality, and other identity categories.

ACAM300 Dis/Orienting Asian Canada Sections

The histories, cultures, social dynamics, and life experiences of Asian communities in Canada in the context of global migrations. Restricted to students with second year status or higher.

ACAM350 Asian Canadian Community-Based Media Sections

Digital media production in the context of community engagement. Includes critical media literacy, community-based research ethics, project design, training in media forms such audio, video, photography, and web publishing.

ASIA100 Introduction to Traditional Asia Sections

A survey of the histories and cultures of Asia before 1600 and the coming of the Europeans. Emphasis will be given to parallel themes in the development of the civilizations of South, Southeast and East Asia.

ASIA101 Introduction to Modern Asia Sections

A survey of the emergence of modern Asia. Aims at an understanding of how the various peoples of Asia have maintained distinctive cultural identities despite centuries of political, economic, social and cultural change.

ASIA110 Introduction to Religions in Asia Sections

A survey of religious traditions of Asia, including communities, professionals, practices and beliefs of small-scale and large-scale societies. Approaches and theories drawn from the field of religious studies.

ASIA212 Writing About Japan Sections

Literary, historiographic, religious, and feminist approaches to Japanese myths, legal tracts, religious tales, fiction, and poetry.

ASIA254 Sex, Gender, and Sexuality in Japanese Literature and Film Sections

The integral role that sex, gender, and sexuality play in literary and cinematic works from Japan. Literary works will be read in translation, movies will be subtitled.

ASIA305 Asian Horror Cinema: National Nightmares and Specters of Trauma Sections

Engaging with the ideologies, industrial histories, socio-cultural contexts, and aesthetics of horror films - and the genre itself - from various Asian cinemas.

Japanese history (political, economic, social and cultural) to 1600.

ASIA315 Japan from Feudal to Modern State Sections

Japanese history from 1600 to the Meiji Restoration. Political, economic, social and cultural forces which were involved in transforming Japan.

ASIA326 Critical Approaches to Manga and Anime Sections

A critical introduction to Japanese manga and anime in the 20th and 21st centuries.

ASIA354 Introduction to Japanese Cinema Sections

Students will be introduced to the work of the major directors (e.g., Ozu, Mizoguchi, Kurosawa, Itami, Oshima, Shinoda). Ideological uses of literary texts and period pieces (e.g., Ugetsu, Life of Oharu, Double Suicide). Impact of depiction of Japanese in American film.

ASIA364A Modern Japanese Literature in Translation - MOD JAPN LIT TRN Sections

An introduction to the literature and cultural history of modern Japan, with readings drawn from various literary genres, from 1868 to the present.

ASIA387 Japanese Religions Sections

An introduction to traditional Japanese religions including Shinto, Buddhism, Shugendo, Confucianism, new religions and folklore, and their roles in Japanese history, culture and society.

ASIA410 International Relations in Premodern East Asia Sections

International relations, particularly between Korea and Japan in the premodern East Asian context, focusing on migration, trade, diplomacy, war, collective memory, mutual perceptions, and the context of the Sinocentric international order.

ASIA430 International Relations in Modern East Asia: Korea and Japan Sections

Trade, diplomacy, war, imperialism, militarism, colonialism, collective memory, mutual perceptions Korean-Japanese relations are examined as an exemplary case for exploring the dimensions of international conflict and partnership.

ASIA498 Asia in Museums and Beyond Sections

Museological representations of Asia in colonial and post-colonial contexts, including exploration of art and photography at museums. Credit will be granted for only one of ASIA 498 or ASIA 598.

ECON441 The Process of Economic Development Sections

Industrialization of an agrarian economy; how the West grew rich; history of Japanese development; technical progress and growth; evolution of the patterns of income distribution; role of international trade in development; environment and development.

GEOG352 Urbanization in the Global South Sections

The role of cities in development and global capital circulation, and urban politics with emphasis on regions in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Credit will be granted for only one of GEOG 352 or URST 352.

JAPN320 Intermediate Japanese I A Sections

Integrated coverage of topics on culture and cross-cultural communication designed to develop competencies in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. It is strongly recommended that JAPN 320 and JAPN 321 be taken in the same year. Credit will be granted for only one of JAPN 320 or JAPN 210 or JAPN 360.

JAPN321 Intermediate Japanese I B Sections

JAPN400 Advanced Modern Japanese: Reading and Writing I Sections

Selected texts covering various aspects of Japanese cultural history and contemporary Japanese culture/society; emphasis on grammatical analysis and development of advanced competencies for reading and writing. It is strongly recommended that students plan to complete both JAPN 400 and JAPN 401 within one year. Credit will be granted for only one of JAPN 400 or JAPN 300.

JAPN401 Advanced Modern Japanese: Reading and Writing II Sections

Continuation of JAPN 301. It is strongly recommended that students plan to complete both JAPN 400 and JAPN 401 within one year. Credit will be granted for only one of JAPN 401 or JAPN 301.

JAPN422 Classical Japanese I Sections

The grammar, orthography, and literary style of pre-modern Japanese (bungo). It is strongly recommended that students have 12 credits of JAPN, or equivalent, prior to registration. Credit will be granted for only one of JAPN 422 or JAPN 311.

JAPN452 Readings in Modern Japanese Essays Sections

Advanced reading and analysis of scholarly texts in modern Japanese drawn from history, sociology, economics, etc. Advanced conversation, composition, and practice in the use of standard reference tools as preparation for independent research in Japanese. Students are recommended to complete JAPN 403 prior to taking JAPN 452. Credit will be granted for only one of JAPN 452 or JAPN 406.
