JSAC 2010 Annual Conference

Japan Studies Association of Canada (JSAC)

23rd Annual Conference, “Japan in the Pacific Neighbourhood”

The annual conference of the Japanese Studies Association of Canada (JSAC) is the only national level meeting bringing together a wide range of scholars from Canada and other countries, such as Japan and the United States. The meeting provides a valuable and unique scholarly gathering of Japanese studies in Canada.

The 2010 meeting of the Japan Studies Association of Canada is titled: “Japan in the Pacific Neighbourhood” reflecting the Pacific coast location of the University of British Columbia and the proximity between Vancouver and Japan across the Pacific. The conference will include a wide variety of fields of Japanese studies, including Japan-Canada economic and commercial ties, language, literature and cultural ties, ecology, history, society, economic development, innovation, and political relations. The Conference will bring together an estimated 100 scholars from Canada and other countries, as JSAC meetings have increasingly attracted international audiences. In conjunction with the conference, we will organize a graduate student workshop and a public outreach event focused on current challenges in Japanese and Canadian public policy. Special attractions will include field trips and receptions. Keynote speakers are Carol Gluck (George Sansom Professor of History, Columbia University), Takehiko Kariya (Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies, Oxford University) and Masaru Kohno (Faculty of Political Science and Economics, Waseda University).

Most sessions will take place on the campus of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver.
