About the Speaker

Educated in Cambridge, Keio (Tokyo), and Oxford Universities, Dr. Chris Goto-Jones is Professor in Philosophy and Dean of Humanities at University of Victoria.  He is also a Professorial Research Fellow at SOAS, University of London, and a Senior Research Fellow in Politics & International Relations at Oxford University.  He was previously Professor of Comparative Philosophy & Political Thought and Professor of Modern Japan Studies at Leiden University (The Netherlands). He is particularly interested in sources of philosophy and modes of philosophical thinking that fall outside the disciplinary mainstream, such as non-European philosophy (especially in Japan and East Asia), non-textual philosophy (especially in performance, visual, and interactive media). His recent publications are Conjuring Asia: Magic, Orientalism, and the Making of the Modern World (Cambridge UP, 2016), and The Virtual Ninja Manifesto: Fighting Games, Martial Arts, and Gamic Orientalism (Rowman & Littlefield, 2016).  His articles have appeared in journals like Philosophy, boundary2, Modern Asian Studies.
