The Centre for Japanese Research condemns the recent hate crime in Georgia and the rise in anti-Asian racism in the United States, in Vancouver, BC, and in Canada. We call on the UBC community of faculty, staff, and students to recognize and respond to racism in our community.
In 2019, half of UBC students who identified as ethnically Asian reported experiencing discrimination. Since the onset of the pandemic, half of reported anti-Asian racist incidents in Canada took place in BC, with women targeted in 70% of incidents, half of which took place in public spaces.
The Centre for Japanese Research is committed to furthering research on Japan in an inclusive and equitable way, and to working in solidarity with students, staff, and faculty to enhance understanding about Japan.
