CJR Graduate & Honours Student Research Grants

UBC graduate students presenting at a conference or workshop, or needing to travel for Japan- related research, may apply to the CJR Graduate Student Research-Travel Grant for reimbursement of conference- or research-related travel expenses, up to a maximum limit of CDN $2000. If the CJR approves your request for support, you will be reimbursed upon presentation of receipts for travel expenses and a short final report.  Research related to a doctoral dissertation or master’s or honours thesis will be given preference.

An application should include:

  1. Proposed budget
  2. Maximum two-page proposal, including an explanation of why you need to make the trip and the anticipated dates of the trip. In the case of workshop- or conference travel, please provide evidence of acceptance as a presenter.
  3. Email of support from a UBC faculty member (sent directly to the CJR Director, yves.tiberghien@ubc.ca with clear Subject line: CJR grant application)
  4. Indication of other sources of funding applied for (and amounts) and whether or not you have applied for and received CJR funding before. Applicants who are applying for the first time will be given first consideration, but all applications will be considered.
  5. Deadlines are November 30 and February 28, twice per year.

Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Scholarship Open for Applications

**THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS HAS PASSED**

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of the Government of Japan is currently accepting applications for the 2024 Research Student Scholarship for students who wish to study at Japanese universities as research or post-graduate students.

The scholarship covers:
1. Full tuition
2. Monthly allowance
3. Round-trip flight between Japan and Canada

The Research Student Scholarship is aimed at university graduates, born on or after April 2, 1989 (for the 2024 scholarship year). The area of research or post-grad study should be in the same or related field that the applicant has previously studied.

Application guides and forms are available through the links on the Consulate General of Japan website: https://www.vancouver.ca.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_en/mext_en.html. Application deadline for the 2024 scholarship year: May 15, 2023.

Applicants who successfully pass the written application screening are required to undertake an interview and examination (English and Japanese language) to be held in late June/early July 2023 on a date designated by the Consulate General of Japan. Interviews and examinations must be conducted in-person at the Consulate General of Japan’s offices. Please note that fluency in Japanese is not necessarily required, but dependent on the nature of the university and study program as selected by the scholarship candidate.
